Happily Ever After

Ok, so Happily Ever After may be a bit premature as far as the house goes, but in terms of the cabinets I believe we are there! Here is the before and after shots to show you just how dramatic the change really is.
It's hard to tell in the photo, but the poly was starting to chip off the cabinets, and they had some pretty bad staining. I certainly prefer the new look to the old one!
Another thing that's a bit hard to see in these grainy iPhone photos is the difference in color between the uppers and lowers in the after photo. The uppers are painted in Sherwin Williams Twinkle (SW 7135) which is white with a very very slight hint of blue to it. The lowers are Zircon (SW 7667) which is a light shade of gray.
If you have any questions about the colors or the process feel free to comment below!

  1. I would love to know how the paint lasts on these! Did you use an enamel? oil-based paint?

    1. It has been almost 6 months since we painted the cabinets, and they are holding up really well. We used Sherwin Williams ProClassic in a satin finish.

I love the way they turned out, and with a clumsy 4 year old running around they are certainly being tested for durability the have had numerous foods spilled on them, they have been colored on with chalk, and crayon, and so far I haven't had any problems cleaning them.
According to Sherwin Williams the ProClassic paint has a "smooth enamel finish for trim and doors" they recommend using the gloss finish for cabinets, but we figured we would risk it with the satin, because we wanted more of a matte finish. Sherwin Williams describes the satin as "With it's slight gloss, this finish offers the benefits of a flat finish with added cleanability", and I would have to say that their description is pretty much spot on.
Overall I am really happy with the product. I'm not sure how well it will hold up when we get to the five or ten year point, but I don't know that I'll make it much more than another year without wanting to change it up anyway. If I were to paint them again I think I would use an oil based paint because of its easier application, and unquestionable durability.
This was probably my longest reply ever. I suppose I need to do a more detailed cabinet post very soon!
